We’ll explore some of them and find out what parents are doing to reverse the addiction epidemic. Computer technology has the power to enrich our lives through unprecedented efficiency, convenience, and the unique opportunities it affords. Tablets and smartphones bring the world to our fingertips. Screens are commonplace and even necessary, with much of our work and schooling reliant on the Internet, and on-the-go families needing a way to easily keep in touch. Like any tool, however, this modern miracle presents a double-edged sword. Sadly, many parents are blind to the risks, leaving their kids open to dangers that range from emotional reliance and addiction to physical endangerment and sexual exploitation/victimization. Let’s take a look at some of the challenges faced by a generation raised on screens, and ways parents can help overcome the problems. Techno-perversion An online adult predator began grooming Lucie James (pseudonym) when she was only 10 years old. Using social media to befriend her, he built trust over the course of a year before arranging an in-person meeting where he sexually assaulted her for the first of many times. The abusive relationship lasted several years before her parents realized and stopped it. Authorities determined the man had been grooming and abusing other children at the same time, in a process that is becoming commonplace. The Telegraph, which reported the story, says that in the U.K. alone, police arrest “six people a day grooming children via social media apps.” “Grooming is really easy to understand once you give thought to it,” explains Alicia Kozakiewicz in an interview with the nonprofit watchdog group Enough Is Enough. Kozakiewicz (shown above) survived four days of sexual assault and torture when an Internet predator kidnapped her and chained her in his basement. He had spent a year grooming her online; thinking he was a peer, the 13-year-old corresponded with him on the family computer in the living room. In her youth and naiveté, it never occurred to her that she was befriending a monster. “Everybody wants to feel loved…. These people online are willing to make you feel that way. And they do it in the most subtle ways.” Now founder of advocacy group The Alicia Project, Kozakiewicz works to protect children and teens who are both easily duped and swamped by the vast volume of porn available online. In an Enough Is Enough interview, he described how easy it is to take advantage of young minds. “I would just start by asking for a regular picture, and then if it got to that level I would eventually ask for a picture of a more sexual nature.” Often such predators are involved in lucrative child-pornography rings, a problem that is skyrocketing according to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) statistics. The FBI works closely with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which receives automatic tips from Internet search engines such as Google and Bing about suspected child pornography. NCMEC analyzes the images in its database and passes findings to the FBI. Between 2010 and 2018, the annual number of tips exploded from 213,000 to more than 18.4 million. Judy Smith with the U.S. attorney’s office in Denver calls it an avalanche. She told PBS News Hour, “We just feel like we’re dishing the ocean out with a spoon.” Smith, who serves as chief of cybercrime in Denver, related that one of the websites her team was monitoring at the time featured a little girl. “You can tell she’s self-producing. I mean, she’s holding the cell phone out. She’s nude. She’s maybe 10, 11 years old.” Smith explained that online predators entice children such as this girl and then exploit them through blackmail or threats. She said the problem is growing as increasingly younger children are allowed to carry smartphones. More often than not, access equates to exposure. “If you have the Internet, you have pornography in your home,” therapist Jill Manning, Ph.D., relates at InternetSafety101.org. Manning refers to the troubling problem of unwanted exposure to sexual material. Though the numbers of young people actively seeking out immoral images online are gut-wrenching (security technology company Bitdefender reported last year that kids under age 10 account for 10 percent of visitors to porn video sites), University of New Hampshire research found that one in four young Internet users age 10 to 17 report unwilling exposure to sexual material online — and that only accounts for those who admit it. Nonprofit Fight the New Drug, Inc. says the average age of first exposure to pornography is nine to 11 years old. “If 60% of 10 and 11-year-olds have smartphones, is it really all that surprising that, sometimes, they encounter porn online whether they’re looking for it or not?” Even more disturbing: In 2017, the British Journal of School Nursing reported that children under 10 make up 22 percent of online porn consumption among individuals age 18 and under. Each day, users generate 68 million search queries related to pornography, says Internet security company Webroot. That’s a full quarter of daily search engine requests, and teens and young adults (age 12 to 29 years) make up the majority of Internet users. The screen accountability software company Covenant Eyes warns that only 12 percent of parents realize their children are accessing pornography, while security software company McAfee reports that “71% of teens have admitted to hiding what they do online from their parents,” including clearing browser history, lying about their behavior, and having secret social-media accounts. Moreover, the material available is deviant and extreme. “Soft porn has disappeared,” warns Enough Is Enough, which also notes that “free access means porn use has skyrocketed.” Your Brain on Screens How is all this filth affecting our children? Along with the psycho-social detriments that porn ushers in, such as warped relationships and family life, as well as heightened risk of committing personal or criminal sexual offenses, pornography actually inflicts physical harm on the brain. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Psychiatry offers this rather technical explanation: “Pornography consumption is associated with decreased brain volume in the right striatum, decreased left striatum activation, and lower functional connectivity to the prefrontal cortex.” In layman’s terms: “As hours of reported pornography use increase, the amount of gray matter in the brain decreases.” Writing in the Surgical Neurology International journal, neuroscientists Donald Hilton and Clark Watts compare it to brain damage observed in patients who suffer physical head trauma. While atrophy progresses, addiction sets in. A brain hooked on porn is frighteningly similar to one hooked on drugs. Cambridge University reports, “Our brains react to pornography the same way an alcoholic might react to seeing a drink advertisement.” Porn activates the brain’s reward system, pumping out the neurotransmitter dopamine, which plays a major role in motivating our actions. Dopamine wires the brain’s reward circuitry based on what we feed it, and because young people’s brains are still developing, they are much more susceptible to porn’s rewiring. Furthermore, overstimulation with dopamine overrides the brain’s mechanisms that dictate self-control, and dopamine receptors shrink from overstimulation — meaning it takes more dopamine for the user to achieve the desired effect. The result is two-fold: The brain’s frontal lobes physically contract, and the addict searches out increasingly hardcore material to chase the dopamine high. This is exactly what happens to people who abuse drugs such as meth and cocaine. In fact, researchers observe the same doped-brain effects in Internet addicts — even those who do not use porn — behaviors such as aggressiveness, poor judgment, and lack of self-control. “People with Internet addiction have been found to have less grey matter in several important areas of the brain, including the frontal lobes (which oversee things like planning, prioritizing, and controlling impulses), the striatum (which is involved with the reward center and helps us control our behavior), and the insula (an area involved with feeling empathy and compassion for others).” These conclusions published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience describe what we’re doing to our kids when we plant them in front of screens — be they smartphones, tablets, computers, or TVs. Such devices deliver instant gratification that doesn’t exist in the real world, making children prefer virtual reality. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says that even very young children are spending seven hours a day in front of electronic media. The mental health social network Psych Central reports that “56 percent of children between the ages of 10 to 13” own smartphones, while a quarter of children between ages two and five have them. Scientists are concerned about their brain development. Dr. Aric Sigman, an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society and a fellow of Britain’s Royal Society of Medicine, told Psychology Today that when very young children are subjected to too much screen time at too early an age, it can cause lasting damage to their developing brains. “The very thing impending the development of the abilities that parents are so eager to foster through tablets,” he says, “the ability to focus, to concentrate, to lend attention, to sense other people’s attitudes and communicate with them, to build a large vocabulary — all those abilities are harmed.” He explains that the brain grows differently between birth and age three than it does throughout the remainder of life. Sigman says this is called “the critical period,” when the brain’s frontal lobe learns to comprehend and interpret relationships, relying on authentic human interaction. Researchers identify stunted development in children who spend too much time in front of screens rather than interacting with the real world. Numerous studies confirm Sigman. JAMA Pediatrics reports negative long-term effects in infants having media exposure as early as six months. The babies exhibited a decrease in cognitive and language development at 14 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends parents “avoid digital media use, except video chatting, in children younger than 18 to 24 months.” Dr. Dimitri Christakis of Seattle Children’s Hospital, who helped write the AAP guidelines for screen time, told 60 Minutes the reason they want parents to pull the plug, even if the intended purpose is to educate rather than entertain. “What we know about babies playing with iPads is that they don’t transfer what they learn from the iPad to the real world,” he said, giving the example of an app that allows children to stack virtual Legos. The same kids don’t know what to do with the real toys. “It’s not a transferable skill,” Christakis explained. “They don’t transfer the knowledge from two dimensions to three.” Older children also suffer negative screen influences. An investigation of four-year-olds examined the impact of fast-paced cartoon viewing on their “executive function” — which encompasses attention, memory, self-control and goal-directed behavior and is strongly associated with success in school. The medical journal Pediatrics found that “just 9 minutes of viewing a fast-paced television cartoon had immediate negative effects on the 4 year olds’ executive function.” Nine- and 10-year-olds who spend more than two hours per day on screens achieve lower scores on thinking and language tests, according to baseline results from the ongoing study Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development, funded by the National Institutes of Health. Automatons How these effects impact society is illustrated in the Harvard Business Review article “The Importance of Spatial Thinking Now,” in which geography professor Kirk Goldsberry complains, “The problem is simple: not enough people know how to make maps or handle spatial data sets.” With Siri around to tell you where to go, who needs maps anymore? Our kids do! It seems that map reading is important for building children’s spatial and reasoning skills, which helps them make sense of their world. Spatial reasoning is a critical skill for students of mathematics, engineering, architecture, meteorology, and a host of other fields in which the United States is losing ground as we decline from a manufacturing to a service economy. Glued to virtual reality, students are losing the ability to visualize and create in the real world. They’re also getting lazy. Unlike reading a book, which prompts children to flex their cognitive muscles, watching TV or using a tablet spoon-feeds ideas and images to them. The device is doing the thinking; the child passively absorbs with little substantive involvement. This sedentary non-activity also plays out in unhealthy weight gain. HHS-funded research reveals that watching television “significantly” lowers kids’ metabolic rates and is likely related to the rise in childhood obesity in this country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says obesity now afflicts 20 percent of young people ages six to 19. Digital dependence is wreaking havoc on the bodies of screen-stoned teens in other ways. In 2016, scientists investigated the effect of smartphones on posture and respiratory function in young adults, as recorded in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science. Researchers found pronounced head forward posture in smartphone users, which they explained predisposes people to a variety of disorders such as chronic headache, chronic neck pain, vertebral disorders, and dyskinesia (disruptions in voluntary movement). They also discovered that this slumped-shoulder phenomenon goes hand-in-hand with impaired respiratory function. Digital eyestrain is another evolving problem. Who hasn’t experienced discomfort, dry eyes, or blurred vision from looking at screens too closely and for too long? Studies suggest that long-term exposure to blue light from screens can lead to retinal damage and macular degeneration. Additionally, according to the National Eye Institute, children’s eyes absorb more blue light from digital devices than adults’, making them more susceptible to physical damage and more sensitive to sleep disruption. The American Optometric Association recommends limiting kids’ access to electronic devices before bedtime since these “can delay sleep onset, degrade sleep quality and impair alertness the following day.” The Dark Side of Bright Screens Lack of sleep is also one of the main culprits in the connection between mobile phone use and the current spate of teen mental health issues, according to the journal Child Development. Author and parenting expert Christine Carter, Ph.D., points out in Greater Good Magazine the alarming correlation between a surge in teen depression, anxiety, and suicide rates “that began shortly after smartphones and tablets became widespread among teenagers, around 2012.” She relates that multiple long-term studies reveal more time spent online translates to higher risk of depression and suicide. (HHS and CDC statistics list suicide as the second-leading cause of death among 10- to 24-year-olds, and they record a sharp uptick in attempted suicide and depression rates among teens since 2012.) At the heart of this issue is social media, which plays such a major role in the lives of most young people, it has become their new playground. But it’s a playground filled with bullies who are not confined to school grounds. Victims describe cyberbullying as inescapable, and in extreme cases it has pushed them to suicide. This isn’t normal teen drama or kids having spats. Nonprofit ConnectSafely.org describes cyberbullying as “serious aggression, usually targeted and repeated,” sometimes by anonymous attackers, affecting roughly a quarter of middle- and high-school students in the United States. It comes in various forms: publicly posted gossip, deliberate exclusion from online groups, harassment, cyberstalking, or cyberthreats. “Trolls” trick the unwary into revealing private information, or they break into an online account to impersonate the victim. “Flamers” are particularly offensive aggressors who intentionally start social networking fights using profane and hostile language. The severity of cyberbullying came to light in a 2017 Massachusetts texting-suicide case. Michelle Carter was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the 2014 death of her long-distance boyfriend, Conrad Roy. At age 17, in a series of text messages and phone calls, Carter urged Roy to kill himself. It’s the subject of HBO’s new documentary I Love You, Now Die, due for release this summer. Place2Be is a U.K. charity founded by Lucy Alexander after cyberbullying pushed her son to end his life. “People who never even met Felix were abusing him over social media,” she wrote shortly after his death in 2016, describing what he experienced as “cruel and overwhelming ... mental torture.” Place2Be works to prevent further tragedy by offering counseling and other resources to schoolchildren. Hooked These problems haven’t happened by accident; there is a concerted effort to get both you and your children addicted to the digital world. Habit Summit is a behavioral design conference held each year since 2013 in San Francisco. Organized by consultant Nir Eyal, author of Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products, his classes teach programmers and tech entrepreneurs “how to form behaviors” by exploiting the compulsive and addictive aspects of technology. “The products and services we use habitually alter our everyday behavior, just as their designers intended,” Eyal says. “Our actions have been engineered.” Tristan Harris warns this is the aim of Silicon Valley elites. Former Google employee and founder of the Center for Humane Technology, Harris, along with Eyal and other high-tech insiders, studied under BJ Fogg, a Stanford University behavioral psychologist renowned in tech circles for his mastery of persuasive technological design. Harris recounts for The Atlantic that he learned how to manipulate people through tactics similar to Pavlov’s dog experiments. Social-media companies use algorithms to accomplish the same conditioning. Facebook infuriated users in 2012 when it bragged about its experiments on them, rigging their news feeds to evoke positive or negative emotions and thereby elicit predictable responses. Here’s an example: Facebook feeds you negative posts and news stories for a week. Your natural response is to quell the sadness by clicking the advertisement that just happened to pop up for your favorite product. (Remember, advertisers pay Facebook every time you click their ads.) Alternatively, you might be showered with positive messages encouraging a certain behavior, such as voting for a particular candidate. Political pundits credit Facebook for an extra 340,000 people who showed up at the polls in the 2010 congressional elections because of an experiment the company sprang on its unsuspecting clientele. If you don’t like being manipulated, too bad. When you launched your Facebook account, you agreed to terms of use that allow the company full freedom to gather and use data about you. They do it all the time. In 2017, The Australian obtained a leaked internal report by Facebook executives revealing that the company monitors posts to determine users’ moods and target them based on their emotional state. While some may call that a marketing tactic, Harris says companies pay big money for technology that exploits people’s emotions to keep them hooked. “I don’t know a more urgent problem than this,” Harris warns. “A handful of people working at a handful of technology companies, through their choices will steer what a billion people are thinking today.” Worth noting is that while Eyal derives his lucrative income from the techno-addictions of others, he admits protecting his own family. He told The Guardian that he pulls the plug on Internet access at his house at a set time each day. “The idea is to remember that we are not powerless,” he explained. “We are in control.” He’s not alone. Last year, writing for the New York Times, Nellie Bowles profiled several tech leaders — including Bill Gates and Steve Jobs — who wouldn’t let their young children near screens. “On the scale between candy and crack cocaine, it’s closer to crack cocaine,” explained Chris Anderson, former editor of Wired magazine and founder of GeekDad.com. He also has strict online rules for his children. He told Bowles, “We thought we could control it. And this is beyond our control. This is going straight to the pleasure centers of the developing brain. This is beyond our capacity as regular parents to understand.” Indeed, few parents understand, and the result is techno-addiction. Research by the nonprofit Common Sense Media (CSM) reveals that a typical teen spends up to nine hours a day on a device, whether texting, gaming, video watching, or posting on social media, and 50 percent of teenagers self-report addiction to mobile devices. Some media pundits downplay the problem. Julie Jargon — who until April was a beat reporter for the Wall Street Journal covering restaurants and food companies, and is now its “Family & Tech” columnist — assures parents that “just because it’s hard for your kids to put down the game controllers doesn’t mean they’re addicts.” But clear-thinking, credentialed experts have no difficulty labeling the epidemic. “We’re talking about kids who will not stop playing video games unless a parent or the imminence of a bodily function forces them to stop. How is that not an addiction?” asks John Rosemond, psychologist and nationally syndicated columnist. He recalls a 15-year-old patient whose obsession was so intense it disrupted his family and social life. After Rosemond persuaded the parents to confiscate all devices, the young man “went nuts” and nearly destroyed his room. “Two weeks of silence and self-imposed seclusion later, he admitted to his parents that he felt much, much better and was going to try and help other boys conquer their addictions.” Not all stories have such a happy ending. Rosemond reports that many gamers have taken to wearing adult undergarments so play is not interrupted. He says that is “where a child or teen’s obsession with video games can lead if parents don’t pull the plug.” How can they, when they are addicted, too? A 2016 CSM survey of U.S. parents of eight- to 18-year-olds shows the adults are spending more than nine hours a day on screen media, with 82 percent of that time devoted to personal, non-professional use. How is this affecting their kids? Leading by example, parents are sending negative messages. Fifty-four percent of children feel their parents check devices too often, 32 percent feel neglected by that behavior, and parents absorbed in their screens tend to have harsh reactions when interrupted. Moreover, parents aren’t truly aware of what their kids are doing online. While more than half believe they know what’s going on, 54 percent of teens admit their parents would be a lot more worried if they actually did. Want to test your knowledge? What Parents Can Do Pulling the plug entirely is impractical and unrealistic. That non-solution would deprive families of legitimate sources of information and communication. For many, school and work depend on screens. While taking advantage of benefits, however, we must stay wise to risks. We must teach our children that screens are tools, not toys, not live-in nannies, and certainly not BFFs. In Rosemond’s words, we need parents “who are not trying to be their kids’ friends; parents who understand that children, including most teenagers, know only what they want, which is precisely why they require adults in their lives who know what they need.” Since addictions are rooted in their brains, what they need is rewiring. The good news is the brain has a delete button. Fight the New Drug explains that we learn things by building and strengthening neural connections. Removing yourself from the object of addiction and engaging in wholesome activities destroys old connections and forms new, healthy ones. For the 15-year-old in Rosemond’s example, the process took two weeks. That’s encouraging. Also reassuring is the work of University of Pennsylvania neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Newberg, who has spent years studying the effect of prayer. Author of numerous books including How God Changes Your Brain and Why God Won’t Go Away: Brain Science and the Biology of Belief, Newberg finds measurable improvement in addiction-ravaged brains after prayer or meditation. Should it come as a surprise that we find the answer to screen addiction in virtuous actions such as self-regulation, moderation, productiveness, and prayer? Diligence on the part of parents is the secret ingredient in the mix, and that means some heavy lifting at times. Discipline takes effort, from both the recipient and the source. Will your child always like you? Of course not. But prying him from virtual reality into the real world will better prepare him for adulthood and protect him from a life of digital dependence. ___________________________ The Washington Times: The biggest college scandal of all

The seething anger that Americans feel over the college admissions scandal with wealthy and well-connected families using money, influence and cheating to bump their kids up in line so they get accepted into elite schools is well-justified. Yet this scheme is small potatoes compared to the real scandal on college campuses from coast to coast. That scam is how much universities are charging families once they do get in. College tuition, room and board costs can now exceed $50,000 to $70,000 a year. This is a massive financial hardship of the families that actually pay out-of-pocket the $200,000 to $300,000 tab for a four-year degree and for those who get loans. The debt for a 22-year-old graduate can easily exceed $100,000. Meanwhile, the size of the student loan debt nationwide has reached some $1.7 trillion. As one solution, leading voices in the Democratic Party — ranging from Sens. Bernie Sanders to Kamala Harris to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — are touting "free college" or even more guaranteed student loans for families. The worst idea of all is student loan forgiveness of up to $1 trillion. This would only shift the costs of expensive colleges onto the back of taxpayers — many of whom never even went to college. There are two glaring problems with free college. First, instituting free college tuition does nothing to incentivize college administrators to lower costs. Instead, it simply transfers the burden of paying for higher education from kids whose families have relatively high incomes to general taxpayers, many of whom didn’t go to college at all. As education economist Richard Vedder of Ohio University has pointed out, "free college" would be one of the most regressive public policies of modern times. Second, we know from other industries, such as health care, the bigger the government role, the more costs escalate. There is a much more equitable and practical solution to lowering the high cost of universities — especially at the most expensive and elite schools. The federal government could incentive colleges with high tuitions to lower their costs by tapping into their tax deductible massive endowments. It turns out that endowments have exactly the opposite effects on tuition that one might expect: The higher the endowment, the higher the tuition. The feds have the leverage to reverse this. The latest analysis at Openthebooks.com has discovered that the 25 colleges with the largest endowments in the nation pulled down $7 billion in federal student aid last year. These universities hold a quarter-trillion dollars in existing assets, collectively. Notre Dame, Princeton, Yale, Harvard and other elite schools like Duke and USC can’t make a plausible case for the need for billions of dollars annually in federal subsidies when these schools’ bank accounts hold hundreds of millions and in many cases billions of dollars of funds. Without any new gifts, most if not all Ivy League endowment could fund full-ride scholarships for all financially needy undergraduate students for the next half-century. With continued gifts to universities, tuition could practically be free to students forever without the endowments running dry. The way to cut tuitions, starting with the most expensive colleges, is to require these schools to lower their tuitions each year by 5 percent to 10 percent and make up the difference by either cutting costs (that’s easy) or using their endowments to subsidize the out-of-pocket costs paid by students and/or taxpayers. We are not fans of price controls. But if universities are going to rely on taxpayers to subsidize their exorbitant costs, it makes sense for the public to hold these schools to the high standards they say they hold their students to. If they don’t take federal money, they can do as they wish. Lower college tuitions are easily achievable for every family in America, and unlike our failed multi-billion-dollar student loan programs, or populist slogans like "free college tuition," this strategy won’t cost taxpayers a dime. December 10, 2018 by Ben Marquis Though she never directly involved herself in the legislative process, former first lady Michelle Obama became the face of an incredibly unpopular effort to make school lunches healthier during her husband’s tenure, an effort that made school lunches unappetizing for many school children, so much so that many students simply refused to eat. But hungry students across the country can let out a cheer now that the strict regulations on the nutritional values of school lunches imposed during the Obama era are being rolledback under President Donald Trump’s U.S. Department of Agriculture. In a bid to provide schools with more flexibility to meet their varied and specific nutritional needs for students, the USDA is scaling back the strict mandates imposed by the Obama administration, according to NBC News. Rigid requirements relaxedChief among the rollbacks was a requirement that only whole grain foods be served, a mandate that has now been reduced to require only half of the foods served to be of the whole grain variety. Following close on the heels of that change, a prohibition against flavored milk that wasn’t fat-free has also been lifted, meaning students can once again enjoy cartons of low-fat chocolate milk with their lunches. Similarly, lofty goals for the significant limitation of sodium in school lunches have been done away with, though more easily attainable goals of reduced sodium content remain in place. NBC noted that the relaxation of the rules had been requested by an industry group known as the School Nutrition Association, which includes members that range from local cafeteria operators to national franchises like Domino’s Pizza, Kelloggs, and PepsiCo, among others. The association had argued that the whole grains-only requirement had proven too difficult for some schools to reach, and requested more flexibility in terms of being able to accommodate the different cultural and regional tastes of students. Listening to and accommodating for “real-world experience”In a news release about the rule changes by the USDA, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said: “USDA is committed to serving meals to kids that are both nutritious and satisfying. These common-sense flexibilities provide excellent customer service to our local school nutrition professionals, while giving children the world-class food service they deserve. “If kids are not eating what is being served, they are not benefiting, and food is being wasted,” Perdue continued. “We all have the same goals in mind — the health and development of our young people. USDA trusts our local operators to serve healthy meals that meet local preferences and build bright futures with good nutrition. “We will continue to listen to schools, and make common-sense changes as needed, to ensure they can meet the needs of their students based on their real-world experience in local communities,” he added. The USDA further noted that the scaled-back nutritional requirements and increased local flexibility would ultimately prove beneficial to the health and well-being of the estimated 30 million students per year who take part in the USDA’s school lunch program at some 99,000 schools and institutions nationwide. The healthy school lunch mandates had been an achievement the Obama administration and former first lady were exceedingly proud of, but they stood alone when it came to the thoughts and feelings of the students who actually have to eat those school lunches. The grownups in charge of Rocky Top Middle School in Thornton, Colorado thought it would be a good idea to invite a drag queen named “Jessica L’Whor” to interact with boys and girls at Career Day. That pretty much sums up what is wrong with our nation’s public school system, folks. Parents are outraged and rightfully so because the taxpayer-funded school did not send out any notification that the children would be hanging out with a drag queen. “I was pretty appalled. I was pretty surprised. It was a shock because no one was notified,” parent Jen Payer told television station Fox 31. “This person is an adult entertainer and is talking to 12-year-old students about something that’s adult [in] nature,” parent Heather Rogers told television station KDVR. Principal Chelsea Behanna apologized for not informing parents beforehand, but she also defended the invitation because the inclusion of the drag queen reflected diversity. “She used the text to illustrate the damage bullies can do, the need to always put kindness and acceptance at the forefront, and the shortsightedness of judging a book by its cover,” the principal wrote in a letter to parents. “Students were completely engaged and asked lots of great questions.” I have no doubt the students had plenty of questions – like why is that guy wearing a dress? Jessica L’Whor said he had a terrific time reading to the boys and girls. “I had a couple kids that were like, ‘I’m gay in school and I get bullied every week and I don’t know what to do and just talking to you helped me realize that I can still be me and still be happy,’” Ms. Jessica said. “I got messages being like, ‘Thank you so much for coming to my class. I was having a really horrible week and you made my day.’” And the drag queen hopes to visit even more taxpayer-funded schools. “I want to go to more elementary schools, because of this experience at Rocky Top, I’ve already reached out to a couple people about how to develop a Ted Talk,” L’Whor told KDVR. In other words, parents who object to their first graders being indoctrinated by a drag queen might want to consider home schooling. Aug 10, 2018 The East Penn School District has submitted to Liberty Counsel’s demand on behalf of concerned parents and complied with Pennsylvania law, by providing the links to the YouTube videos that were shown to more than 2,000 high school students as part of the district’s “Unity Week” and promotion of GLSEN’s “Day of Silence.” Emmaus High School required the students to watch the videos, which promoted homosexuality, same-sex “marriage” and gender dysphoria, on the school TV system without prior notice to their parents or an opportunity to opt-out. The school counselor, Kristen Grim, who is also the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) faculty sponsor, previously sent a suggested list of YouTube videos to a school employee to be shown during the “Unity Week.” However, the school district denied parents’ requests for the video links, stating the videos “were pulled from YouTube and other online sources by the students in our GSA club and sent to the TV studio as part of their ‘Day of Silence’ project.” The district’s attorney advised “that these videos cannot be sent to parents, because they are part of a student project,” despite the district playing the videos for all students. Parents were left to try to find the videos on their own based on descriptions of the video content provided by the school district and descriptions of the video content as related by their children. The videos released in the records request are: 1 – Buzzfeed’s “9 Questions Gay People Have About Straight People.” 2 - A CBS News story clip “Non-binary: The gender beyond he or she” promoting “gender fluidity." 3 – “Bill Nye on Sexuality and Gender Spectrum” 4 – YouTube spotlight “Show your pride. Share your love.” #ProudToLove” Liberty Counsel is now reviewing all public records relating to the 2018 event. The records show significant teacher-led involvement and editorial control and faculty promotion of the “student-led” activism of the GSA. In fact, Principal Kieres rewarded faculty who showed support for “Day of Silence.” Kieres stated, “I'm all in for whatever you need. I like the idea of teachers wearing GSA or NPFH shirts if they wish. I am delighted to go on the announcements and read a script. According to a report by Citizens for National Security, Florida schools contain 25 Pro Islam- biased textbooks. Schools also use obscene materials, and some distinctly anti-American books such as “A People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn. Zinn famously stated on a television interview, that “The world would have been better off had America never existed.” New Florida legislation now makes it mandatory for school districts to allow citizens to review textbooks and make recommendations to the school districts. Truth in Textbooks is looking for volunteers to take their course on textbook reviewing and then start reviewing textbooks county by county. “Truth in Textbooks is starting our 4th year of training volunteers to help return “truth to textbooks” in our children’s classrooms around the country. Common Core? What was in Public School textbooks 150 years ago? Selling a million copies a year for over 100 years, McGuffey's Readers were the mainstay of public education in America. Generations of school children read them, making them some of the most influential books of all time. They were written by William McGuffey, who died MAY 4, 1873. A professor at the University of Virginia and president of Ohio University, William McGuffey began one of nation's first teachers' associations. In the foreword of McGuffey's Reader, 1836, he wrote: "The Christian religion is the religion of our country. From it are derived our prevalent notions of the character of God, the great moral governor of the universe. On its doctrines are founded the peculiarities of our free institutions." McGuffey's Eclectic Sixth Reader, 1907, included a quote from Lyman Beecher: "While most nations trace their origin to barbarians, the foundations of our nation were laid by civilized men, by Christians... The memory of our fathers should be the watchword of liberty throughout the land; for, imperfect as they were, the world before had not seen their like, nor will it soon, we fear, behold their like again. Such models of moral excellence, such apostles of civil and religious liberty...To ridicule them is national suicide." Middle School Approves Gay Pride Flag, but Rejects Gadsden Flag

School administrators recently hoisted a Gay pride flag in the cafeteria – alongside the American flag and a number of international flags. The Thomas More Society, a religious liberty law firm, said that some students opposed the presentation and presented a petition urging school leaders to remove the flag. However, administrators rejected the student petition. Administrators also rejected a request to fly the Gadsden flag, known historically as the bright yellow “Don’t Tread On Me” banner. Attorney Erick Kaardal called the school’s decision to ban the Gadsden flag and reject the petition “divisive and insensitive.” “It makes it appear that the school supports one group’s beliefs at the expense of others,” he said. “Ironically, of course, the rainbow flag is most famous for being involved in protest, but now those advocating that symbol of protest will not tolerate the expression of opposing ideas.” Dozens of parents attended a recent school board meeting to demand to know why the “rainbow” flag was being preferential treatment. What’s next, curriculum teaching this lifestyle in our classrooms?” one parent asked. “We do not want our children to be learning in a hostile environment.” “During the forum, an eighth-grade student at MMS said the school was stopping expression of opposing views on the flag,” the Marshall Independent reports. “The student said he had a petition taken away by school staff, and when some students put other flags representing themselves on their lockers, they were taken down by a teacher.” Rev. Don LeClere, the pastor of Marshall Evangelical Free Church, told the newspaper that it’s not about hate. “Either erect other lifestyle flags, like the two we submitted, to represent all students, or remove the one lifestyle flag, choosing to remain viewpoint neutral and truly communicating concern or all students,” the pastor said. However, another pastor took issue with the phrase “lifestyle flag.” “It’s not a lifestyle flag,” Rev. Anne Veldhuisen told the newspaper. Miracles do not cluster, and what has happened once in 6,000 years may not happen again.” Recently, I was having dinner with a couple and the comment was made, “I can’t believe how mainstream Socialism is becoming in America. Socialism is the opposite of our founding and what the Constitution stands for.” Unfortunately I can, and I believe I may know why. Currently, the public schools in an overwhelming majority of counties in America devour more than half of the county budgets. And, of course, it’s not enough. It’s never enough. But, aside from the runaway spending, the far more important reason is what I have come to know as a destructive mission of the schools themselves. Before I continue I want to assure you that I speak as an individual who has had the privilege of speaking to several thousand public school students in hundreds of public schools across the country. I have met numerous amazing teachers, principles, and administrators who are doing their best to educate the next generation of Americans to succeed in this ever-changing culture and world. Despite what (my dad has) I have just explained, I still feel that our America’s vast, public, government-run school systems are one of the largest promoters of a godless, socialist agenda, leading to the dumbing-down of the culture. They promote sexual immorality, under the guise of diversity. It’s no accident that students are immersed in radical environmentalism, leading to nonsense like the green new deal. It’s no accident that public schools train children to dismiss and often ignore the values of their parents, leading to the disintegration of the family. And it’s no accident that public schools drain the resources of the citizenry, making it more difficult for families to educate their children privately. During my last two public school presentations, I was applauded by teachers and students… but not before everyone looked over their shoulders wondering how in the world I could discuss the topic of the biblical underpinnings of American Government in their school. There is an ominous presence holding everyone in fear, and purposefully preventing them from teaching any historical realities of America, her God, and her current crisis. Aside from the high walls, the metal detectors and the statist ethos that permeates them already, “public” education officials across multiple states now working to have facial-recognition cameras put in, too. According to a report in Gizmodo, schools all over the country are now splurging on “security” gear that was once reserved for international airports and high-security prisons. Aside from the facial-recognition systems that could identify everybody who passes by, public schools are buying “object recognition” systems to detect weapons, and even license-plate tracking technology. Apparently, the software and “machine-learning algorithms” that go with all the new gear will even be able to detect “behavior” that might pose a “safety threat.” “It is cutting edge,” boasted Technology Director Robert LiPuma with a New York school district about spending almost $4 million of a “state grant” on “high-tech security” for local schools. “We’re hoping to be a model.” Of course, the left-wing media fretted about concerns about “race,” “fairness,” and “gender.” But outside of the kooky world of “social-justice warriors” where everything is somehow about race and class and gender, there are plenty of legitimate concerns about this kind of surveillance technology being deployed against children in schools. For one, there are major privacy issues. Who will have access to the data? What will it be used for? Could pedophiles use it to stalk or spy on children? Could the data be added to the federal dossiers being compiled on Americans citizens by a dizzying array of bureaucracies? Could it be combined with other data being vacuumed up by the schools? Will the government incorporate it into decision-making that affects citizens' lives? Obviously, the questions are troubling — and based on what is known already, the answers are even more troubling. Consider, too, some of the other technology being deployed at government schools to spy on children. For instance, the federal government boasted about funding the use of a “facial expression camera” used to “detect emotion” and “capture facial expressions.” The feds are also funding the creation of data-gathering robots to compile even more information on children, including “mental health” data. In some cases, schools have even been spying on children at home via their government-issued technology. All of this data is then being stored in federal databases. And the feds are openly bragging about it! “A student learning database stores time-stamped student input and behaviors captured as students work within the system,” boasted a U.S. Department of Education report. The same document celebrates the “predictive model” that “combines demographic data and learning/behavior data from the student learning database to track a student’s progress and make predictions about his or her future behaviors or performance.” At the rate government schools are going, they will soon become “panopticon”-style prisons in which every move and every facial expression of every child will be vacuumed up, stored, and analyzed by the nation's would-be federal overlords and their computer systems. It does not take much imagination to recognize the incredible danger inherent in these developments. All the facial-recognition cameras and data-mining in the world will not be able to prevent the unfolding disasters taking place across America's government-run indoctrination centers: school shootings, drug use, abortions, promiscuity, suicide, ubiquitous ignorance, and evil run amok. Jul 24, 2018 The Republican National Committee unanimously approved a resolution to repeal obscenity exemptions and protect public school children by requiring parental notification and approval for all human sexuality instruction to be only “opt in” instead of the meaningless “opt out” that has been used. Drafted by Cynthia Dunbar, Republican National Committee member for Virginia, the resolution protects students from potentially unsuitable content by supporting a parent’s right to grant prior consent for sex education. Many state laws and local school policies usually require that schools notify parents that their children will be taught human sexuality and provide access to review the materials. Then parents have the opportunity to notify the school that their child is to be exempt from the instruction and needs to be given an alternative. However, these policies have been manipulated in many cases as districts do not always provide a complete description of the materials, make access difficult, and include the “opt out” forms with the flood of other permission slips and forms that parents have to fill out at the beginning of the school year. As a result, parents do not have effective notice of what their children will be exposed to or chance to opt them out. The “opt out” laws are also usually limited to “human sexuality instruction” or “sex ed” and do not cover other subjects in which the materials would be offered. Opponents of the bill say it's a big win for homeschoolers and parental rights. “A massive victory for homeschool families, parental rights, and government by consent of the people,” said Jonathan Keller, president of California Family Council. “Thanks to the thousands of homeschool families and supporters who flooded the Capitol, legislators were reminded that this building is still the people’s house.” The bill, known as AB 2756, was designed to gather more data on families who choose to homeschool their children instead of using public schools. The legislation was crafted in response to the horrific Turpin family incident, where the parents held their 13 children hostage, torturing and starving them for years. The incident went undetected by California school officials because the children were being homeschooled by their abusers. Backers of AB 2756 pointed to that nightmare scenario as a reason for better tracking of homeschooled children. Yet, supporters of homeschoolers saw the bill as an attack on their way of life and the freedoms this country provides. According to the Family Research Council, state Assemblyman Kevin Kiley called the Turpin incident “an extreme outlier case.” The representative of the state's 6th District added: "Any dataset will have extreme outlier cases." When word came down that the bill died in committee, Kiley tweeted: #AB2756 was just defeated in the Assembly Education Committee. The major victory for all the homeschool educators, parents, and students who came to the Capitol and made their voice heard. Senior Staff Attorney Matthew McReynolds of the Pacific Justice Institute tells CBN News this bill was just a way for some legislators to flex their muscles to be seen as “doing something” in the wake of the Turpin tragedy. McReynolds noted that when lawmakers were pushed to explain the reasoning for the bill, "the author of AB 2756 could not identify any problems with the many other law-abiding homeschoolers in the state. Pearson Education took over teacher certification for New York State in 2014 with its Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) and is the sole administrator and evaluator of the assessment. A 2012 article written by New York Hofstra University educator Alan Singer asks the question, “Pearson ‘Education’ – Who Are These People?” It is a pivotal question. Alan Singer writes, “The question that must be addressed is whether the British publishing giant Pearson and its Pearson Education subsidy should determine who is qualified to teach and what should be taught in New York State and the United States? I don’t think so! Not only did no one elect them, but when people learn who they are, they might not want them anywhere near a school — or a government official.” In a particularly egregious example of Pearson’s ideological bias, many advanced placement students used a 2018 textbook published by Pearson titled, By the People: A History of the United States. The final section titled The Angry Election of 2016 depicts President Trump as mentally ill and his supporters as racists. A Pearson spokesperson defended the textbook insisting it had undergone “rigorous peer review to ensure academic integrity.” This is the predictable outcome of globalist ideology and globalist revisionism disguised as scholarship. Pearson is unapologetically committed to globalism and is a signatory to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In Pearson’s own words: “The good news is that the world has agreed on a plan to put us on a more sustainable path and ensure that no one is left behind. Pearson claims the sale is part of its ongoing work to become a simpler more efficient company. That is company-speak for their move toward higher education and digital delivery of their globalist educational curriculum. Pearson is going to college! In their own words: “The broader US K-12 market remains an important area of focus for Pearson and we are continuing to invest in faster-growing digital services such as virtual schools and building on our strong position in US student assessment. We will continue to provide Higher Education courseware for Advanced Placement programmes in K12 schools.” The odd terms of the deal only give Pearson $25 million cash upfront but after the balance is paid Pearson retains 20% of the future cash flow from the business and is entitled to 20% of the sale price if Nexus sells. So who is Nexus Capital? What did they buy? Why the odd deal? Nexus is a Los Angeles-based private equity firm and member of Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA). EMPEA is a consortium of globalist companies that share information in their singular objective of creating unfettered world markets for their goods and services. Sustainable is the watchword. Sustainable is the abracadabra Open Sesame key that begins with private equity firms in emerging markets and ends in one world government. They claim teachers are leaving due to current school climates. A tally of resignation numbers of the resignations approved by the Columbus City Schools Board over the last few years show that, on average, 180 teachers have resigned each calendar year since 2016. After contacting dozens of the teachers on the list, ABC 6's Scoring Our Schools found out the main reason for leaving was feelings of lack of student discipline and lack of administrative support. "At least 60% of your day is spent disciplining," said one elementary school teacher who left in the middle of this school year, who asked that their identity not be revealed. Even in elementary school, she said she did not feel safe. "You could have a fight breaking out," she said. "You could have somebody literally throwing chairs. And, you could have somebody screaming because they were so upset about what's going on." Like others who retired, this teacher said she would buzz the office from her classroom for help, but no one would come. "To keep them in that environment, that triggers another fight, another fight. Hercules Capital also fell in intraday trading when it was revealed that its CEO and largest holder Manuel Henriquez was named in the DOJ affidavit. -- Federal prosecutors announced that they were charging dozens of people, including famous actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, in an alleged scheme to help students get admitted to colleges under false pretenses on Tuesday. They are being charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud. 38 people have reportedly been arrested thus far. Prosecutors are alleging that the individuals charged tried to bribe college entrance exam officials in order to cheat on admissions tests and that some conspired to bribe coaches and administrators to label their children as “recruited athletes”. Athletes can sometimes get preferential treatment. Among the colleges involved were Georgetown University, Yale University, Stanford University and University of California Los Angeles, according to a WSJ writeup. Charitable organizations were used as fronts for the bribery payments, according to authorities. A Newport Beach college counseling business, the Edge College & Career Network LLC, was named as the main facilitator of the bribes. More than $6 million in bribes were paid, according to The Daily Mail, who also reported that “[Lori] Loughlin and her husband ‘agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team'”. Loughlin’s husband Mossimo Giannulli has also been charged. It was also reported that Huffman paid a $15,000 charitable contribution. Her and her husband William H. Macy had planned to do the same for a younger daughter of theirs later this month, according to reports. It was alleged that Huffman’s daughter was able to cheat on her SATs as a result of the payments. According to the Daily Mail: Huffman had the site where he daughter took the SATs moved from her own high school to a test center West Hollywood. Her test was then administered by a proctor who had flown in from Tampa and told investigators that he ‘facilitated cheating, either by correcting the student’s answers after the test or by actively assisting the student during the exam.’ In this case, Huffman daughter scored a 1420, which was a 400 point improvement from her PSAT results just one year prior. Soon after the proctor was paid $40,000 by the same organization that Huffman would later give a $15,000 donation according to the documents. The document by authorities filed on Tuesday read: ‘Beginning in or about 2011, and continuing through the present, the defendants — principally individuals whose high-school age children were applying to college — conspired with others to use bribery and other forms of fraud to facilitate their children’s admission to colleges and universities in the District of Massachusetts and elsewhere, including Yale University, Stanford University, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California, and the University of Southern California — Los Angeles.’ Boston authorities called the bust “the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice.” The authorities continued, stating that the group involved included “CEOs…successful securities and real estate investors, 2 well-known actresses, a famous fashion designer and a co-chairman of a global law firm”. Bill McGlashan, the millionaire investor and CAA board member who founded The Rise Fund alongside Bono is also reported to be included among the names of those charged. James “Duke” Pesta, an associate professor of English at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, presents a two-page contract to his students on the first day of class that asks them to drop the course if they are “triggered” or offended by certain ideas or beliefs. What does the contract say?“In this course, we study literature from cultures that existed before you were born. Their world is not our world. Their beliefs may not be our beliefs. No one asks you to believe or endorse any premise, attitude, precept, theology, political system, or ideology contained in these books or expressed in class. Nor will you ever lose points or be docked grades because of your opinion (written, oral, or otherwise),” the contract’s Statement of Purpose reads, the College Fix said. “We will not malign or trivialize these texts because they do not always parrot our values. We will not assume these books are racist, sexist, or homophobic because of the period in which they were written, or because of the race, class, gender, or religion of the authors,” the contract also says, the outlet reported. “People who approach alien cultures with such preconceived notions are bigots masquerading as critically sophisticated advocates, often in the name of ‘social justice.’ Persons who so diminish the past are neither social nor just, especially when they compel students to adopt their biases.” The College Fix noted that the contract also offers the following instructions:
“I have learned through personal experience that university administrators and equity officers are often not willing to defend classroom speech, even if that speech is taken directly from books or used to explain them,” he told the College Fix. ‘Intrusive investigatory process just by complaining’“Students are now keenly aware that they can put professors through an intrusive investigatory process just by complaining, even without any corroborating evidence. I have even had department heads who allow students to substitute required classes for other courses just because students complain about what they have ‘heard’ a professor’s classes are like,” Pesta added to the outlet. “My contract is an attempt to make it harder for these kangaroo court investigations to be launched in the first place.” What does Pesta have to say about trigger warnings?Pesta told the College Fix he finds trigger warnings — which inform students in advance that subject matter might offend them — “appalling from an educational standpoint.” “But I have come to realize that they may have more utility for professors than students,” he added to the outlet. “It’s one more way to try and indemnify yourself from malicious and unfounded complaints by driving away at the outset students who only want their own preconceived ideas validated.” How have students reacted to the contract?Pesta told the College Fix that students so far have been willing to sign his contract. “I’ve not encountered a student yet who would not sign,” he added to the outlet. “I do tell them, when I pass it out the first day, that if they refuse to sign they will have to meet with me sometime during the first week of classes to discuss the contract and make sure we’re on the same page.” Here’s Pesta discussing “Back to School in the Age of Trump” for FreedomProject: ___________________________ Dangerous people are filling the heads of young people with dangerous nonsense.
