Bugging in and Defending your Family, Home Fortress
by Lukas Nicholson
When it comes to prepping for TEOTWAWKI, take into account where you and your family will be living most of the time – at home. Truth be told, you won’t be gunning down hordes of infected zombies or using a machete to slash your way to eventual happiness and freedom. This is not prepping, this is movie fiction. Prepping is about taking necessary precautions to ensure you and your family will be able to survive independently should any event cause the pillars of society (Federal government, international economy, etc.) to crumble – this means plentiful life necessities such as food and water, and protecting those resources and your family from those who may attempt to obtain those resources from your possession, called raiders. How can you protect your home? Here are some tips.
Let’s get one thing straight: life is no videogame. When an attack on your home occurs, you will not be magically outfitted with a shotgun, satchel of grenades, and plentiful ammunition. Let’s switch perspectives a bit – if your family was starving and hungry, would you invade another’s home in broad daylight when they are most aware and likely prepared for an attack? Probably not. So, ensure you are ready regardless of the time of day and thinking two steps ahead of your assailants. Best practices to ensure your home security are to:
Prepping is no joke. To some it means acquiring an armory worth of weapons and ammunition, a cellar full of Twinkies, an underwater shelter, or other fictitious movie-based apocalyptic preparation procedures. Prepping is real. The world is crammed with desire-filled capitalists, and the resources available will soon be scarce. The world we know today is literally unsustainable. There will be a breaking point. It may be ugly, it may not. Regardless of the situation, your loved ones will remain and must be protected. Will you be ready?

So, ensure you are ready regardless of the time of day and thinking two steps ahead of your assailants. Best practices to ensure your home security are to:
- Limit Points of Access (POA) to the home. You should have only two ways to enter the house – the “front” door and the concealed door. This way, attackers will stay within your frontal cone of vision and cannot enter through the back.
- Reinforce doors. Do not allow outsiders to simply walk through your door to threaten your family. Thick steel doors, dead bolts… Do anything you can to strengthen your perimeter.
- Provisional home defense. While barbed wire and glass shards are a little extreme, they are effective when it comes to intimidating potential guests.
- WOC weapon of choice. I always wondered why my father kept a bat underneath the bed. As a prepper and home owner, I now understand. You never know who can enter your house unwarranted and unexpected. Sprays also work quite well. Bear spray is an option only for serious preppers.
- Threat Level White – Urgency is low, no immediate threats are imminent. Caution is still present.
- Threat Level Yellow – No immediate threat is imminent but scouts have been deployed and a sense of concern is at hand in preparation for a potential attack.
- Threat Level Orange – Any minute an attack may transpire. Each member of the family/unit is positioned at their assigned defensive placements.
- Threat Level Red – Threat is real and underway. An invasion is in progress or the first shots have been fired. Defensive positions have been taken and heels have dug in. It’s a fight to survive or incapacitate opposing forces by any means necessary.
